THE MAN BEHIND VOTRE MAJESTE

Looking up to Gianni Versace as a role model has birthed a talented fashion designer, originally from Mpumalanga in Siyabuswa, Khulekani Fezile Gumbi.

His passion for fashion comes a long way and led him to commence with designing for his own fashion brand in 2017. Khulekani (22) “it was not easy at all without financial support, it is still not easy even now”. However, that did not stop Khulekani to do what he is good at.

The brand Votre Majeste has been into existence for 4 years now, even though the has been some challenges, such as finances, he was able to keep everything going. Khulekani would love to see his brand as a well-known brand nationally in the next five years and go internationally after it has deeply grounded in South Africa first.

Afterall, South Africa is where he was born, and it is crucial for him that the brand he started for himself and clothing’s that he designed with his own hands to be recognised in the mother land before other countries are to recognise it. The fact that he is always out of fashion also “sparked the idea of actually creating fashion for myself and I ended up starting my clothing brand”.

Khulekani is the man of many talents, besides focusing on his brand and designing clothes, he is a sales assistant in one of the well-known sportswear stores in South Africa, Totalsports.  According to him, it is very simple to focus on being a fashion designer and branding, with being a sales assistant because both jobs are fashion oriented.

Now, his goal is to be able to bring out the best version of himself, and he needs both experience, which makes things easy for him to be able to handle. Khulenani’s target market is not a specific group of individuals, however, is for everyone who sees fashion beyond just clothes, “but the deeper concept of it” he explains.

Furthermore, it is also people who understand the craft and appearance all the finer details and people who can give an expression of themselves through fashion. Khulenani’s preferred colour of all time is black because it is bold enough to make “the melanin in my skin pop out more”.

Moreover, he is more into baggy clothes because of the comfortability that they have, and they suit any body type. “I prefer summer because it brings out the natural seduction, where people actually dress less and show more skin”.

Threads with Anele

Anele Mtimkulu (20) a second year BA in Journalism student and owner of thee anele apparel from Rooderpoort is making moves with her clothing designs which she made on her own.

Anele who was inspired by Mrs Ola Folami who owns Olarsgrace, is now creating her own fashion designs. “Mrs Ola Folami inspires me when i create designs, that woman is phenomenal in fashion” she said. The garment that Anele made for the first time is a gown and a fleece jacket.

What encouraged Anele to become a seamstress was not always finding what you are looking for, mostly because of the unavailability of size at the store. She said “I am tall and i always find pants that are not long enough and it is frustrating”. The kind of clothes she sews are comfort clothes for now, because they are what she sews best at the moment.

She sew:

  • Bomber jackets
  • Sweat pants
  • Tracksuit clothing

Anele’s goal in the next five years is to own a degree in fashion design, but for now she is focusing on getting a journalism degree. “With regards to sewing, hopefully I manage to open a store and sell very affordable clothes, and unique, I want to produce clothes that are not too basic” she said.

What Anele loves about sewing is the process of creating clothing and the fun of it. However, like any other human being she has strengths and weaknesses. She is hardworking and barely make mistakes, but the problem is, she is slow and struggle to communicate, “I leave people hanging sometimes” says Anele.

However, she also love wearing comfort clothing and not pants that requires a belt for support, but pants that are elastic on the waist. Therefore, Anele uses instagram to promote and advertise the garments that she creates on her own. If you ever wish to own thee anele apparel clothing brand send a direct message on instagram (@thee.anele_apparel) for order.

Fashion: then and now

Fashion has come a long way and many people are falling in love with it. Fashion is transforming year after year, and sometimes is the same fashion but different style. There are a variety of clothes and shoes that were worn back then and they are still available now with more creativity.

Denim jeans

In 1873, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis saw an opportunity to introduce denim jeans. However, these denim jeans are still a trend till today. Fashion trends have been coming and going, but denim jeans are always available in many wardrobes. Therefore, there are many types of jeans to choose from, such as:

  • Tight jeans
  • Bootlet jeans
  • Flared jeans
  • High waist
  • Boyfriend jeans and more

It is amazing how fashion designers transform vintage clothes and make them a trend and stylish, such as the bootleg jeans.

Dresses

Fashion choices are unlimited these days, because women did not have a wide variety of dresses to choose from in the past. Most dresses that were worn in the 50s were long and below the knees. However, today there are mini, see through and normal dresses that are a little bit above the knees.

Shoes

Today we are witnessing the evolution of fashionable shoes, for instance, the stilettos. Stilettos are famously known for having a thin heel, in the past stilettos had thick heels and that is how the stilettos changed from then to now. Although the stilettos with a thin heel are bought more frequently, the “then” stilettos are still available for purchase in stores.

Shoes are that one material that we cannot live without, and the styles of the shoes are also transforming the way clothes are. Shopping for shoes is a very big task to perform, because not all shoes makes us feel comfortable. Therefore, deciding on what type of shoes and which colour we want is what makes shopping hard.

Therefore, there is a tremendous difference between a fashion then and now.

However, it is important to choose the right outfit for the perfect weather. You do not have to wear clothes that will make the sun cause damage on your skin. There are summer shirts that are available to choose from and good thing is they are in various styles.

People often struggle to choose which designer outfit they can put on sometimes or they do not feel like wearing designer clothes on that certain day. Remember that whenever you are unsure of what to wear, there are plain short sleeved t-shirts in some fine fabric, along with plain/jean short set that you can choose from.

Comfort is also key when you are wearing an outfit. You need to feel comfortable in your clothes, some people do not prefer short pants because they are not comfortable in them. There are ripped jeans that you can wear, short/ long skirts or a beautiful colourful flowered dress. Another thing about summer clothes is to make sure that you do not feel hot when you wearing them.

Therefore it is essential to sort out your wardrobe before the beginning of summer, so you can have an idea of what to wear when its hot outside. In addition use sunscreens to prevent the heat from damaging your skin when you are wearing clothes that shows off your skin.
